Citing Images in APA Referencing

Refering to Images in APA Referencing Refering to Images in APA Referencing Most sources you refer to in a school paper will be text based (e.g., books and diary articles). Once in a while, however, you may need to remember a picture or photo for your work. In any case, how would you refer to pictures in scholastic composition? In this post, we take a gander at how this functions in APA referencing. Remembering Images for a Document In APA referencing, â€Å"images† incorporate photos, artworks, delineations, charts, tables, and diagrams. Also, any picture you remember for your work should accompany an inscription. You can utilize the subtitle device in Microsoft Word to do this, however you can likewise include inscriptions physically whenever liked. The subtitle that goes with a picture ought to do in any event three things: Name the picture so it very well may be distinguished in the content (e.g., Figure 1, Figure 2). Give a title to the picture or depict what it appears or speaks to. Offer any extra subtleties (e.g., when a photo was taken). A photograph with an APA picture inscription. In the event that the picture is your own work (e.g., a photograph you took yourself), at that point this is sufficient. What's more, except if your school’s style direct says else, you don't have to give a reference. Nor do you have to remember your own photos or delineations for the reference list toward the finish of your report. Be that as it may, on the off chance that you have taken a picture from another source (e.g., a photo discovered on the web), you should reference it in full. We will clarify how this functions in the remainder of this article. In-Text Citations for Images In-text references for pictures can work two different ways in APA referencing. You can basically allude to a picture in the content. For instance, if you somehow managed to expound on a work of art without remembering the picture itself for the record, you would have the option to refer to it as follows: In November 2018, Portrait of an Artist (Hockney, 1972) turned into the most costly masterpiece to sell at closeout by a living craftsman. In the event that you do remember a picture for your work, the reference ought to go in the inscription. An APA reference in a picture subtitle. You would then allude to the picture in the content utilizing the mark from the inscription (i.e., â€Å"Figure 2† for the picture above). This likewise applies in the event that you have obtained an outline or a delineation from a print source (essentially refer to the creators and date of distribution for the print source being referred to). In all cases, however, you should include the picture you have refered to the reference list. Pictures in an APA Reference List Likewise with any source, in the event that you have utilized pictures made by another person in your work, you should remember them for the reference list toward the finish of your archive. On the off chance that you have taken the picture being referred to from another print source (e.g., a chart from a diary article), basically list the print source. In any case, in the event that you have discovered a picture on the web, the organization is somewhat unique: Craftsman Surname, Initial(s). (Year). Title of the work of art [Format]. Recovered from URL For instance, we would list the banner from the model above as follows: Roepp, G. (1943). I’ve secured the position where I fit best! [poster]. Recovered from https://images.northwestern.edu/multiresimages/inu:dil-41913a91-037f-494b-9113-06004a8a98fb Furthermore, don’t neglect to have your composed work edited. This will ensure that every one of your references are clear and complete in the last draft.

Gender Discrimination Free Essays

Social definition is the organized type of social imbalance inside a positioned gathering of individuals that achieve inconsistent money related prizes, for example, a person’s pay, and influence or property, which is brought upon by riches in a general public. The social delineation frameworks come from numerous points of view and structures. For instance, servitude, standings, social class, race, and sexual orientation are only a portion of the issues that are influenced by delineation. We will compose a custom exposition test on Sex Discrimination or on the other hand any comparable subject just for you Request Now This exposition will especially concentrate on the issue of definition by sexual orientation, or as such, sex disparity. Sexual orientation imbalance or otherwise called sex definition, is the inconsistent circulation of a society’s riches, influence, and benefit among females and guys. (Scott and Schwartz, 2000). At the point when the issue is drawn nearer, it is apparent that most of the ladies are the persecuted as thusly the men being the oppressor. This thought of the persecuted versus the oppressor is apparent since forever; even in strict terms, some can go back to God’s creation. For instance, in the Bible, God had gotten Adam and Eve eat from the tree of the information on great and insidiousness, which was prohibited. It is written in the Bible, â€Å"To the lady he (God) stated, I will incredibly expand your torment in childbearing; with torment you will bring forth kids. Your longing will be for you spouse, and he will govern over you. † (Genesis 3:16). Around the mid-nineteenth century until these days, three convictions about ladies and men have won as a major aspect of science or development. One, people have distinctive mental and sexual natures, two-men are intrinsically the predominant or unrivaled sex, and three †both male female contrast and male strength are common. † (Bem, 1993). Thinking about these three convictions, ladies experience sexual orientation disparity in various conditions, generalizations, and occupations. For instance, ladies are generalized to be just a stay at home spouse and to be in a domain where they are l iable for cleaning the house, cooking supper, and dealing with the youngsters. These days, there are more ladies known to have occupations and not a stay at home spouse, however yet they are as yet mindful, or give some duty regarding cleaning the house, cooking supper, and dealing with the kids. With respect to occupations among ladies, they experience the confinements of the occupations accessible. Ladies likewise experience less compensation or income, and the degrading of their work by society. An article, Social Class and Gender, composed by Nancy Andes, communicates word related delineation by sexual orientation disparity through the examination of three hypothetical structures or points of view. The primary hypothetical structure is the sex isolation model, which is the place sex is the main trademark that influences the situation of a specialist into a calling or occupation. The second hypothetical structure is the unadulterated class model, which is the place the workers’ position of dictated by their status or position in the general public and how much power and proprietorship they have. The third hypothetical system that is utilized is the coordinated gendered social class model, which is the place sexual orientation and class perform together that influence the situating of ladies as well as men in the work power. After Andes presents the three hypothetical structures, she clarifies every system or approaches inside and out, comparable to a table that communicates the profit and occupations of people. The wellspring of the table, or known as experimental proof, is taken from the UC Bureau of the Census in 1989. The table communicated a wide range of kinds of work in the work power. Inside that work of occupation, the table incorporated the level of ladies inside that occupation, women’s yearly income inside the occupation, and even the men’s yearly profit in that equivalent occupation. Reasons Why Married People Cheat Causes and Risk Factors

Reasons Why Married People Cheat Causes and Risk Factors Relationships Spouses & Partners Marital Problems Print Causes and Risks of Why Married People Cheat Motivations for extramarital affairs are vast and can vary by gender By Sheri Stritof Sheri Stritof has written about marriage and relationships for 20 years. Learn about our Wellness Board Amy Morin, LCSW Updated on November 26, 2019 More in Relationships Spouses & Partners Marital Problems LGBTQ Violence and Abuse There are many reasons why married people cheat. Upwards of 40% of married couples are impacted by infidelity,?? and despite the high percentage, most people â€" even those who stray â€" will say that cheating is wrong. Risk factors such as personality disorders and childhood issues, as well as opportunities such as social media  and poor boundaries, can increase the chance that one of these reasons will actually lead to some type of affair. Frustration in the marriage is one common trigger; the cheater may make several attempts to solve problems to no avail. Maybe they had second thoughts about getting married or they were jealous over the attention is given to a new baby and neither had the skill set to communicate these feelings. Perhaps the straying spouse has childhood baggage â€" neglect, abuse, or a parent who cheated â€" that interferes with his or her ability to maintain a committed relationship. Less often, the cheater doesnt value monogamy, lacks empathy, or simply doesnt care about the consequences. We will take a look at a number of risk factors and causes for cheating, but its important to point out upfront that a partner doesnt cause their spouse to cheat. Whether it was a cry for help, an exit strategy, or a means to get revenge after being cheated on themselves, the cheater alone is responsible for cheating. Verywell / Jessica Olah Motivations Differ by Sex Men are more likely to have affairs than women and are often seeking more sex or attention.?? Men express their love in a more physical way â€" they often dont have the perfect feeling words for their wives. So sex becomes an important path to connection and intimacy. If men arent sexually satisfied (for instance, if their spouse declines sex often), they take that rejection to heart, and it can easily translate to feeling unloved.  In fact, men are more likely than women to cheat due to a feeling of insecurity. When women cheat, theyre often trying to fill an emotional void.?? Women frequently complain of disconnection from a spouse, and of the wish to be desired and cherished. Women are more likely to feel unappreciated or ignored, and seek the emotional intimacy of an extramarital relationship. An affair is more often a transitional partner for the woman as a way to end the relationship. She is seriously looking to leave to her marriage and this other person helps her do just that.   Thats not to say that sexual satisfaction isnt a primary driver of affairs for wives as well as husbands. In one study of men and women who were actively pursuing or involved in extramarital affairs, both genders said they were hoping to improve their sex livesâ€"because they felt their primary relationship was lacking between the sheets. Similarly, boredom with the marital relationship may lead both men and women to cheat. Causes and Risk Factors Theres a myriad of reasons or causes why men or women may engage in an extramarital liaison, but certain risk factorsâ€"either  with one of the individuals or the marriage as a wholeâ€"increasing the odds it will happen. Risk Factors With an Individual The general rule is that it takes two to tango, or in this case, to mess up their marriage with an affair, but there are certainly exceptions. Individual factors that may increase the chance of infidelity include: Addiction: Substance abuse issues, whether its addiction to alcohol, drugs, gambling, or something else, are clear risk factors. Alcohol, in particular, can reduce inhibitions so that a person who wouldnt consider having an affair when sober, may cross the line. Previous Cheating: The saying once a cheater, always a cheater is more than an old wives tale. A 2017 study was the first to evaluate the credibility of this saying.?? In this study, those who were involved in an extramarital sexual relationship were three times more likely to become involved in extramarital relationships in their next relationship. Personality Disorders and Psychological Issues: People who have strong narcissistic traits or personality disorders such as narcissistic personality disorder or antisocial personality disorder are more likely to cheat. With narcissism, an affair may be driven by ego and a sense of entitlement. In addition to being self-centered, people with these disorders often lack empathy, so they dont appreciate the impact of their actions on their spouse. The particular psychological issues or personality traits that raise the risk of adultery in marriage may differ between the sexes. In a 2018 study looking at personality traits, women who ranked high in neuroticism and men who ranked higher in narcissism were more likely to cheat. Some attachment styles, such as attachment avoidance or attachment insecurity, as well as intimacy disorders have also been looked at in relationship to a propensity to cheat. Poor self-esteem and insecurity can also raise the risk of an affair as a way to prove worthiness. Mental Illness: Some mental illnesses, such as bipolar disorder are a risk factor for cheating in marriage. Childhood Issues: Having a history of childhood trauma (such as physical, sexual, or emotional abuse or neglect) is associated with a higher chance that a person will cheat (if he or she has not addressed the trauma and has unresolved issues). Exposure to infidelity in childhood can also increase the risk of infidelity. A 2015 review found that children who are exposed to a parent having an affair are twice as likely to have an affair themselves.?? Sex Addiction: Certainly, sex addiction in one partner increases the chance that they will be unsatisfied with the physical aspect of their marriage and look elsewhere. Risk Factors with the Relationship Problems in the marital relationship can also be a risk factor for cheating. Some of these include: Lack of communicationEmotional and/or physical disconnectLow compatibility (people who married for the wrong reasons): Low compatibility can lead to a sense of buyers remorseDomestic violence and emotional abuseFinancial pressuresLack of respect Tips for Talking to Your Spouse About Difficult Topics Reasons for Cheating With or without individual or marital risk factors there are a number of possible reasons for marital infidelity. Underlying many of the reasons, however, lie a few threads. One is the role of unmet needs. One partner may be incapable of fulfilling their partners needs, but far too often, those needs have not been expressed. Marital partners are not mind readers. Another is the lack of addressing problems directly. Running away from problems (conflict avoidance) rather than staying and addressing them is another crucial element in communication and commitment  in marriage. Some of the reasons cited as the cause for cheating include: Unhappiness/Dissatisfaction: Dissatisfaction with the marriage either emotionally or sexually is common. Marriage is work, and without mutual nurturing couples may grow apart. A sexless marriage is often claimed as a reason by both men and women. Feeling Unappreciated: Feeling unvalued or neglected can lead to infidelity in both sexes, but is more common in women. When both partners work, women still often carry the brunt of the work when it comes to caring for the home and children. In this situation, the affair validates the persons sense of worthiness. On the flip side of this, however, is that feeling neglected may be related to unrealistic expectations of a partner rather than true neglect. Lack of Commitment: Everything else aside, a 2018 study found that people who are less committed to their relationship are more likely to cheat.?? Boredom: As noted, boredom can lead to an affair in both men and women who are looking for the thrill of the chase and the excitement and passion associated with newfound love. Some people claim that, rather than looking for a substitute for their partner, their fling is a way to spice up their marriage. Falling out of love is also frequently cited as a reason for cheating, but maybe a lack of understanding of the normal maturing of love in marriage. Body Image/Aging: Illustrated frequently by stories of middle-aged men having an affair with women the age of their daughters, cheating may sometimes be a way for a man (or woman) to prove that they still have it. Hand in hand with these thoughts, a spouse may cast blame for their own indiscretions by claiming that their spouse has let himself/herself go. Revenge: If one partner has had an affair or has damaged the partner in some way, the offended partner may feel a need for revenge resulting in an affair. Secondary Reasons for Cheating In addition to the primary reasons for cheating noted above, there are secondary reasons that may lead to an affair. Some of these include: The Internet: Having an affair, especially an emotional affair, is much easier than in past, and social media sites have been implicated in many affairs and divorces. Internet infidelity or online cheating is still cheating, even if the two people never met face to face. Pornography: While its a role in marital infidelity has been downplayed, pornography is dangerous to  marriage and has clearly been demonstrated to be a gateway for some people. Unfortunately, pornography has become much more accessible to the internet. Opportunity: Periods of absence, whether traveling for work or serving in the military provide greater opportunity for an affair to occur. Not only do these absences allow a spouse to have an affair with little risk of being discovered, but the absence may lead to the loneliness and resentment often cited as reasons. While a long-distance marriage is not ideal, there are ways to keep your marriage strong when apart. Poor Boundaries: Poor personal boundaries, or the limits we place on other people as to what we find acceptable or unacceptable, can also increase the chance that an affair will occur. People who find it hard to say no (being overly compliant or people pleasers) may find themselves in an affair even if it wasnt what they desired in the first place. Coping With a Cheating Spouse Sometimes people have a suspicion that their spouse is cheating but dont have any solid evidence. While often the best approach in marriage is to be direct, you may wonder if it will cause more damage to ask directly. And, of course, the answer your spouse gives could either be the truth or a lie. The best approach will vary for different couples, but if youre concerned, it may be a good idea to look for some of the signs. Signs Your Spouse Could Be Cheating Cry for Help vs. Exit Strategy In some marriages, an affair is a cry for help, a way to force the couple to finally face the problems that both parties are aware of but arent addressing. In this case, the partner often actually tries to get caught as a way of bringing the issue to the fore. Other times a partner may simply see infidelity as an exit strategyâ€"a way to end an unhappy marriage. Regardless of the underlying reason a spouse cheats, it can either devastate a marriage or be the catalyst for rebuilding it, depending upon how the infidelity is dealt with. Can Your Marriage Survive Infidelity? When Youve Been Wronged If you were the one cheated on, its critical to realize that youre not responsible for your spouse making the decision to cheat. You are not to blame for his or her behavior. You may, however, want to explore how the dynamics between you and your spouse led you to this point. Recognizing that infidelity is a symptom of deeper issues can lead a couple to fix the underlying problems in their relationship and grow closer. Women tend to find emotional affairs more threatening than sexual affairs, whereas men are more willing to forgive emotional affairs but for both, the most common response to learning of their partners affair is jealousy. Even if you were the one wronged, working with a professional may be helpful in coping and recovering yourself. Unresolved jealousy can lead to resentment, and as the old adage claims: Resentment is like poison you drink yourself, and then wait for the other person to die. Tips for Coping When Your Spouse is Unfaithful Overcoming Infidelity Some couples can move past infidelity and move on to have even an even better relationship, whereas some cannot. Certainly, there are times when continuing the marriage wouldnt be recommended. Before you analyze the specifics of the affair from your spouses perspective and look at why the affair occurred in terms of his or her needs, its important to look at your own needs. This can be more challenging than it sounds, especially amidst the jealousy and anger. If you were the one who had an affair, there are several steps you can take if you hope to save your marriage. Foremost you need to stop cheating and lying immediately and own your choice. Being patient and giving your spouse space is essential. That doesnt say it will work out. It may not. But without accepting full responsibility (not blaming or justifying your behavior) the chances will be low. The chance that you can get past the affair depends on many factors, such as the reasons why it occurred and the characteristics of both people. To truly understand and move forward, both partners will need to listen to the other (which can be extremely challenging in this setting), and not assume that their partners motivation or feelings would be the same as their own. For those who decide to try and overcome infidelity, it appears that the mutual capacity to forgive and a strong commitment to the relationship are key. A Word From Verywell There are many potential reasons for cheating, and marriage is complicated. But speaking directly, expressing your needs, practicing forgiveness, and making a commitment to work on your marriage daily are the best insurance plan to protect your marriage. Arshile Gorky, Abstract Expressionist Painter

Arshile Gorky (born Vostanik Manoug Adoian; 1904-1948) was an Armenian-American artist who had a significant impact on the development of abstract expressionism. He is closely associated with his friend Willem de Kooning and the New York School of painters. Fast Facts: Arshile Gorky Full Name: Vostanik Manoug AdoianOccupation: PainterStyle: Abstract expressionismBorn: April 15, 1904 in Khorgom, Ottoman EmpireDied: July 21, 1948 in Sherman, ConnecticutSpouse: Agnes MagruderChildren: Maro, YaldaEducation: New School of Design, BostonSelected Works: Organization (1933-1936), The Liver Is the Cocks Comb (1944), Agony (1947) Early Life and Move to America Born in the village of Khorgom, on the shores of Lake Van in the Ottoman Empire (now part of Turkey), Arshile Gorky was part of a family of Armenian descent. His father left his family in 1908 to emigrate to the U.S. to escape the Ottoman Empires military draft. In 1915, Gorky fled the Lake Van area with his mother and three sisters during the Armenian Genocide. They escaped into Russian-controlled territory. After his mother died of starvation in 1919, Arshile Gorky traveled to the U.S. in 1920 and reunited with his father, but they were never close. Education and Training Arshile Gorky was a self-trained artist when he arrived in the U.S. He enrolled in the New School of Design in Boston and studied there from 1922 to 1924. There, he encountered work by some of the worlds top modernist artists for the first time. He found post-impressionist painter Paul Cezanne particularly influential. Gorkys early landscapes and still lifes demonstrate this impact. Landscape (1927-1928). Wikimedia Commons / Public Domain In 1925, Gorky moved to New York. There he explored the innovative work of Pablo Picasso and the Spanish surrealist Joan Miro. He also developed friendships with other rising artists including Stuart Davis and Willem de Kooning. Cubism, expressionism, and the brightly-colored work of the Fauves all impacted Gorkys work. In New York, the young artist changed his name from the Armenian Vostanik Adoian to Arshile Gorky. It was calculated to escape the negative reputation of Armenian refugees. Sometimes, Arshile even claimed to be a relative of Russian writer Maxim Gorky. Rise in Public Stature Arshile Gorky was among the artists included in the Museum of Modern Arts prestigious 1930 group show of emerging artists. The following year his first solo exhibition took place in Philadelphia. From 1935 to 1941, he worked along with Willem de Kooning for the Works Progress Administration (WPA) of the Federal Art Project. Among the work was a set of murals for the Newark, New Jersey airport. Unfortunately, only two of a set of ten panels still exist. A 1935 Whitney Museum of American Art show titled Abstract Painting in America included Gorky. In the mid-1930s, Gorkys painting shows influences from both Picassos synthetic cubism and Joan Miros organic forms. The painting Organization is a striking depiction of this stage of Gorkys work. Organization (1933-1936). Wikimedia Commons / Public Domain Arshile Gorkys mature style emerged by the early 1940s. It was influenced by both Surrealist painters and the abstract expressionist artists arriving from Europe. Among the recent arrivals escaping Nazi Germany were Josef Albers and Hans Hofmann. Later Years In 1941, Arshile Gorky married Agnes Magruder, who was 20 years younger than him. They had two daughters, but the relationship ultimately was a tragic one. In 1946, Gorkys studio in Connecticut burned to the ground. It destroyed most of his work. A month later, he received a cancer diagnosis. While fighting cancer, Gorky found out that his wife was having an affair with fellow artist Roberto Matta. The couple separated, and the artist was involved in a car accident that hastened his physical deterioration. On July 21, 1948, Arshile Gorky committed suicide. Despite the horrific circumstances of his personal life, the paintings from Gorkys final years are powerful. His 1944 painting The Liver Is the Cocks Comb is perhaps his most fully developed work. It pulls together all of his influences into a style of abstract expressionism distinctly his own. The 1947 painting Agony reflects the personal tragedies in striking, powerful forms. The Liver Is the Cocks Comb (1944). Wikimedia Commons / Public Domain Legacy While he is most often listed as an abstract expressionist painter, a closer analysis reveals that Arshile Gorky assimilated influences from a wide range of 20th century painting movements. His early work explores post-impressionist themes championed by Paul Cezanne. In his move to complete abstraction, Gorky pulls in surrealist ideas and the influence of cubism. Shaun Curry / Getty Images Gorkys legacy is also seen in the relationships he developed with other artists. Willem de Koonings use of personal elements in his work is often credited to his friendship with Arshile Gorky. The energetic style of Gorkys painting has echoes in Jackson Pollocks drip paintings of the 1950s. Source Herrera, Hayden. Arshile Gorky: His Life and Work. Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2005.

Epidemiological Studies on Obesity on Globalâ€Myassignmenthelp.Com

Question: Epidemiological Studies on Obesity on Global Scale? Answer: Introducation The recent concerns regarding obesity has made a large number of scientists to conduct various types of epidemiological studies. All the papers provided by them are based on the prevalence of obesity at a national or global level, the different factors that lead to obesity in different nations as well the various disorders that it results in different organism (Phelan et al., 2015). With the occurrence of an obese condition in patients, different types of morbidities and mortalities are associated which is also discussed in the different papers. The review below will help in depicting such epidemiological papers to provide more light on the topic. A research article was published by authors Steier et al. in the year 2015 which is based on the observational cross sectional study which is a type of epidemiological study determined from a group of population or from a specific subset. The study mainly shows how the occurrence of obesity results in a harmful effect on the respiratory system of different individuals. The lung volume and elasticity of the respiratory system of different individuals were taken into consideration. For this cross sectional observational studies, nine obese and nine normal weight patients were taken into consideration both in the seated and also in the supine condition mainly during spontaneous breathing. The researchers mainly took the help of multi-breath helium method dilution. The recording was mainly done with the help of balloon catheters, esophageal Poe as well as gastric Pgas pressures. This research had shown that the BMI of obese group to be higher in comparison to that of the normal group and expiratory reserve volume has decreased to a high level.. Moreover their end-tidal functional residual capacity was also found to be lower when both the groups were seated but they were similar in supine condition. Gastric pressure was again elevated as well as with their end-expiratory esophageal pressures at FRC. All of these measurements had shown that obese individuals are more prone to increase in their esophageal pressures as well as gastric pressures both in the supine and the seated positions. These had therefore resulted in reduction in FRC as well as ERV. This scenario indicates that due to the mechanism, a pressure is created on the working procedure of the lungs and as a result various disorders take place. Therefore in this way, the researchers have become successful in linking severe obesity with that of respiratory morbidity and also mortality and hence obesity becomes a concern for anyone who might get affected due to pulmonary diseases. The next study was conducted by the Skinner et al. in the year 2015 in order to assess the cardio-metabolic risk factors that were associated with the children and also with the young adults. It had been a case study as all the participants were already exposed to the disorder and cases were depicted with affected participants only and a cross sectional analysis was done. It has been found that the prevalence of cardio metabolic risks is relatively low for the overweight individuals but is highly risky for children who are severely obese. With the growing age, risks associated with the disorder intensify and therefore the authors have advised to initiate a screening program in order to fight the risks associated with severe obesity. The authors had therefore performed a cross sectional analysis of the data that had been taken from overweight as well as the obese children and young adults. The age of such children varied from 3 to 19 years and was considered for the National Health an d Nutrition Examination Survey from 1999 up to 2012. It was done for checking the prevalence of different types of risk factors associated with cardiovascular disorders depending o severity of the obesity. A number of markers of cardiovascular disorders were taken into considerations like the low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, fasting glucose, blood pressure, and glycated hemoglobin. Most of the mean values showed considerably higher values in the individuals with severe obesity in male and females with the number being higher in males. Lower HDL level was found in children with greater severity and lower the HDL, it is more harmful for the physiological system. It was predicted by the authors that low levels of HDL, high systolic and diastolic pressure along with high triglyceride and glycated hemoglobin levels automatically exposes the children to higher threats for cardiovascular disease. Therefore scientists have s uccessfully showed how severity of obesity can act as a threat to different cardio metabolic risk factors making mainly boys and young men exposed to cardiovascular diseases. An important paper was published in the year 2013 by authors like Halfon et al. who also reported the effect of obesity on children. It is a cross sectional analysis study. However this study was not a case study like the previous one but was a cross sectional analysis as the patients who were selected were not already obese. It was also not a cohort study as comparisons were also not made between the newly exposed or unexposed children. The population based study was done on 43297 children whose weight was known from parent report of height and weight. Moreover the authors like the previous on did not only consider on the risks associated with the cardiovascular diseases but also used 21 important indicators that belonged to the domains like psychosocial functioning, general health, health disorders which adjusted for socio-demographic factors. Reports have suggested the obese children who were found to face activity restrictions, internalizing problems, externalizing problems, scho ol problems, grade repetition as well as missed classes in schools. Other important disorders were also found in the obese children like attention deficit hyperactivity disorder as well as conduct disorder. Learning disability depression, and developmental delay are also been found to be some of the harmful effects. Moreover bone, joint and muscles issues also remain closely associated. Other diseases that have been also reported is the asthma, allergies, ear infections and also headaches. Therefore the researchers have advised the physicians, teachers and the parents to understand the specific co morbidities and thereby develop interventions that will enhance the well being of the children who are obese. Another important article was published in the year 2014 by the authors Jagielski et al. where they have successfully established an association within the adiposity, mental condition and well being of an individual as well as Quality of Life in cases of severe obesity. This is a case study type of epidemiology where the participants who were already obese patients were chosen and were sent to the service where the interview was conducted with the help of questionnaires. The sample mainly constituted 263 extreme obese individuals. Two important scales that were utilized by the authors were Impact of Weight on Quality of Life: IWQOL-Lite, EQ5D-3L, and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale: HADS). An interesting result was seen by the authors. Increasing adiposity in the individuals was associated with quality of life negatively therefore stating that they share indirect relationship between the two factors. They have also stated that with increase in adiposity, there is decrease in ph ysical function, public distress, lowers self esteem, poor productivity at work and others. The level of adiposity had resulted in increase in risk of different problems in mobility. Moreover it also resulted in increase in difficulties in performing different usual activities. Moreover, symptoms of depression as well as anxiety were also found to be high in case of patients who are extremely obese. Hence the researchers have been successful in properly establishing the negative effects that rise in adipose levels have on quality lives of the people who are suffering from obesity. Researchers have therefore suggested that clinical implications should be discussed which will contain the needs for incorporating the different interventions that will help in the improvement of mental condition as well as well being into interventions of the the multi-disciplinary weight management. An interesting article has been published by Johanssen et al. in the year 2014. They had conducted a cohort study on the relationship between maternal overweight and obesity and that of the risk of infant mortality. The cohort study was conducted in Sweden from about 1.95023 women with 1 857 822 live single births who were recorded in the Swedish Medical Birth Register from 1992 to 2010. It has been found called a cohort study because comparison was made between the normal weight mothers and that of the overweight mothers when considering the BMI of the mothers and its effect on the birth of their babies. The main factors on which the entire investigation was based were gestational length as well as the infant death while studying the association between the maternal body mass index (BMI) in early pregnancy with that of infant, neonatal and also postneonatal mortality. An interesting result was found. Infant mortality rates increased from 2.4 in 1000 births in normal cases to 5.8 per 1000 births in overweight mothers. The increased rate of mortality was moderate in case of overweight and obese I patients and were very high in mothers with obesity II and Obesity III disorders. The infant mortality rate doubled in case of obesity grade 3 patients. It was found by the researchers that birth asphyxia and other neonatal morbidities increased with that of maternal overweight and obesity. Increased mortality rate in term births as well as increased prevalence in the rate in preterm births is the main results and hence maternal overweight and obesity should be managed. With the above mentioned epidemiological studies, one can easily understand the various harmful effects that obesity has on children and adults. Not only physically, obesity also affects mentally in such a way that quality of life also gets affected. Therefore obesity has become one of the main concerns of every nation and hence epidemiological studies will be extremely helpful in developing interventions and addressing every issue in proper manner. Art for Life essays

Art for Life essays The reintroduction to the arts in the curriculum has been a slow process with many detours along the way. It has also been compared to Gardners theory of multiple intelligences in this way: Three important truths are woven together in Gardners characteristically perceptive trope. First is the encouraging fact that, now, schoolteachers, college professors, administrators, artists, critics, art historians, aestheticians and others, are combining their talents and techniques in an effort to strengthen American art education. Second is the discouraging fact that these par-ties, like those in any new ensemble, are having difficulty in achieving harmony. And third is the practical truth that their own judgment as to what works best will not be the final arbiter of their success. (Moore, p.5) Throughout history, art has brought people together and was considered a great contribu-tion, but my research brought me to this statement: What I want to stress here is not how we are connected to the past, but how strongly we are disconnected. For practical purposes current art instruction doesnt involve a fixed curriculum, a hierarchy of genres, a sequence of courses, a coherent body of knowledge, or a unified theory of practice. (Elkins, p.38) Elkins shows his concern for the lack of stability and instruction in schools regarding art based programs. The arts should be an integral part of the school curriculum from kindergarten through high school graduation. Children should be exposed to original ways of thinking and imagina-tion. They should be allowed to study sculpture, painting, journalism, dance, any for of self-expression that involves creative thinking. However, society has been reduced to relying on computer games and television for their entertainment. Children no longer sit down with cray-ons and paper to draw their rendition of a giraffe in the jungle. Instead, tel...

Tisiphone the Greek Goddess

Tisiphone the Greek Goddess Tisiphone is one of the Furies or Erinyes in Greek mythology. Tisiphone is the avenger of murder. Her name means voice of revenge. The Erinyes were formed when the blood of Uranus fell on Gaia when the son of Uranus, Cronus, killed him. The Furies pursued particularly heinous criminals and drove them mad. Their most famous victim was Orestes, whose crime was matricide. The names of the other Erinyes were Alecto and Megaera. Characteristics In the Eumenides, the tragedy by Aeschylus about the Erinyes and Orestes, the Erinyes are described as dark, not quite women, not quite Gorgons (Medusas), featherless, with rheumy eyes and partial to blood. (The Appearance of Aeschylus Erinyes, by P. G. Maxwell-Stuart. Greece Rome, Vol. 20, No. 1, pp. 81-84) Jane E. Harrison (September 9, 1850 - April 5, 1928) says the Erinyes at Delphi and elsewhere were ancestral ghosts, who later became detached ministers of divine vengeance. The Erinyes are the dark aspect of the benevolent Eumenides the angry ghosts. (Delphika.-(A) The Erinyes. (B) The Omphalos, by Jane E. Harrison. The Journal of Hellenic Studies, Vol. 19, pp. 205-251) It is also claimed that Eumenides is a euphemism for the Erinyes.

INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENT 2 SS Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENT 2 SS - Essay Example The Bendigo bank in Tambellup and Cranbrook is one such kind of social enterprise, rising from humble beginnings to give the two communities their identity. The creation of the community bank is attributable to two individuals, Vicki Brown and Jan Pope, after facing several challenges; they rode on motivating points to spearhead the creation of this bank in their respective community. Overcoming the Feat: Challenges and Motivations they faced. They were motivated by the lack of proper banking services that catered for the needs of the rural community, while listening to a certain show; they reaffirmed Louise Petschler’s concern over poor banking in the country. According to the latter, banking services had deteriorated to the extent that they had failed to provide fair and affordable basic services, additionally, they were providing these at high costs and with poor customer services while closing community branches. CHALLENGES The initiative by Vicki and Jane is typically a c ommercial interest although with a social context, they face numerous legal, financial, management and development challenges that a typical commercial business faces. However, due to the unique communal premise that the business is built upon, they face a considerably different set of challenges than a typical business faces (Fayolle and Harry 8). The key challenges that Vicki Brown and Jan Pope faced were stakeholder participation, balancing of their key objectives, raising finance, and recruitment of professional staff and expert advice Stakeholder participation The key stakeholders in this initiative were the 700 and 1100 members of community for the two towns Tambellup and Cranbrook respectively. Furthermore, the Bendigo Bank was an important participant in the process, this because the community bank would be a franchise of their own establishment. The process of convincing people to contribute money to investing in an enterprise that was yet to be created proved to be a daunt ing task to the two and the steering committee that was in charge of the launch. They were apprehensive that the failure of the business would subject to guilt and a lot of burden. The rural community who were to be bank’s customers was concerned about the confidentiality of their financial information; this was expeditiously addressed by the concerned parties. Pessimism that the locals had over the future of the bank coupled with the show that ABC was running at that time concerning failures of local initiatives. Balancing Key Objectives Vicki and Jan had noted that the agricultural communities in their small towns were being inconvenienced as they were forced to travel long distance to undertake this important service. The lack of facilities in the area affected several businesses in the area and not merely these two major sectors of the area’s economy; an estimated $26,000 was being lost per week to other towns. Any community initiative must strive to balance two ke y objectives, achieve the social purpose for which it was initiated and operate as a sustainable commercial entity (Kickul and Sophie 219). The problem the two initiators faced were the way in which to balance these two objectives. On the other hand, they worried that if the bank performed the first function

Research on any CEO Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

On any CEO - Research Paper Example He attended Cupertino Junior High School and  Homestead High School. At Homestead, he became friends with Bill Fernandez as they same same interests in electronics. Through Bill he came to know Steve Wozniak, with whom he would later co-found Apple. After his high school, Jobs opted to go for Reed College, a private liberal arts institution located in Oregon. The cost of the college was extremely expensive but his parents consented to send him. He had to struggle a lot at the college. He did not have enough money to buy himself a room in the dorm so he used to sleep on the floor in his friends’ room. It was also at Reeds that he was attracted towards the Eastern mysticism and other different philosophical beliefs. Unable to bear the expenses, he eventually decided to drop out. In his own words, "If I had never dropped in on that single course in college, the Mac would have never had multiple  typefaces  or proportionally spaced fonts." He got a Job in Atari in 1974 which relieved some of the financial burden on him. For Jobs, Atari Company was an inspiration as it was the first video game Jobs had become friendly with Wozniak despite a big age difference. Wozniak had an idea of building a personal computer because he was unable to afford an Altair 8800, a personal computer kit famous at that time. ... Meanwhile Wozniak worked on the better design and came up with Apple II. The Apple II was a computing device unlike the world had ever seen before. It had a color display and was compatible with a variety of different programs. Jobs knew that this product would be a revolution in the personal computers industry and he set out to find investors. A retired Intel executive, Mike Markkula decided to invest a huge amount of $250000 in their product and predicted that they would be a part of the Fortune 500 list within the next two years which did happen. Apple II was a huge hit and the company went public in December 1980, just four years after its creation. He was only 25 at that time but his total worth was more than $200 million. Apple’s existence however was soon threatened. IBM, a very renowned name in the industry was planning to venture in the personal computer market which could move Apple out of business if it did not come up with something new. Steve jobs started a projec t named Lisa, which was the name of the daughter of his former girlfriend; even though he refused to agree that he had fathered her. Steve Jobs however started to have conflict with the managers of the Company due to his volatile behavior and he was kicked out of the team that administered the Lisa project. As retaliation, he started to work on the development of Macintosh by hiring extremely bright and talented engineers in his development team. Although initially it was meant to jeopardize the Lisa project and the sales of Apple II, the Company soon started to depend on it after Lisa failed to make its mark in the market. Macintosh was a success for a little time but its demand continually declined. The Company was in a state of chaos because

Examining Practice Of Price Discrimination Economics Essay

Examining Practice Of Price Discrimination Economics Essay Perfect competition is the most efficient market structure because, in the long run, each firm in the market will be producing at its minimum average cost, or per-unit. This means that consumers get desired goods and services at the lowest possible prices, and also that the firms are economizing on societys scarce resources to the greatest extent possible. What is the difference between the concepts of diseconomies of scale, and the law of diminishing return? (4 marks) Law of diminishing return occurs in the short-run when one factor is fixed. If the variable factor of production is increased, there comes a point where it will become less productive and therefore there will eventually be a decreasing marginal and then average product. When long-run average total cost rises as output increases, there are said to be diseconomies of scale. a. Sally owns a ceiling fan company. Last year, she sold 1000 ceiling fans at $50 each, and each fan cost her $20. Before going into the ceiling fan business, she worked as a fan-dancer at $25,000 a year. She used her own money to buy the fans by withdrawing the money from her savings account where it was earning five percent annual interest. Calculate Sallys economic profit and her accounting profit. Should Sally continue with her ceiling fan business? Explain. (6 marks) If her economic profit is at least zero, Sally should stay in business. Her TR = $50,000 and her total accounting cost is $20,000, for an accounting profit of $30,000. She forgoes interest on savings of $20,000 (.05) = $1,000 as well as forgone earnings of $25,000. This leaves $4,000 in economic profit, so she should stay in business. Bob Edwards owns a bagel shop. Bob hires an economist who assesses the shape of the bagel shops average total cost (ATC) curve as a function of the number of bagels produced. The results indicate a U-shaped average total cost curve. Bobs economist explains that ATC is U-shaped for two reasons. The first reason is the existence of diminishing marginal product, which causes it to rise. What is the second reason? Explain your answer. Assume that the marginal cost curve is linear. (4 marks) Average fixed cost always declines as output rises because fixed cost is being spread over a larger number of units, thus causing the average total cost curve to fall. a. Provide two circumstances in which monopoly may offer efficiency advantages over competition. (4 marks) A monopolist might be better positioned to exploit economies of scale leasing to an equilibrium which gives a higher output and a lower price than under competitive conditions. As firms are able to earn abnormal profits in the long run there may be a faster rate of technological development that will reduce costs and produce better quality products for consumers. This is because the monopolist will invest profits into research and development to promote dynamic efficiency. Explain the practice of tying and discuss why it is controversial. (5 marks) Tying is the practice of bundling goods for sale. It is controversial because it is perceived as a tool for expanding the market power of firms by forcing consumers to purchase additional products. However, economists are skeptical that a buyers willingness to pay increases just because to products are bundled together. In other words, simply bundling two products together doesnt necessarily add any value. It is more accurately believed to be a form of price discrimination. Describe the source of tension between cooperation and self-interest in a market characterized by oligopoly. Use an example of an actual cartel arrangement to demonstrate why this tension creates instability in cartels. (5 marks) The source of the tension exists because total profits are maximized when oligopolists cooperate on price and quantity by operating as a monopolist. However, individual profits can be gained by individuals cheating on their cooperative agreement. This is why cooperative agreements among members of a cartel are inherently unstable. a. If the average total cost curve is falling, what is necessarily true of the marginal cost curve? If the average total cost curve is rising, what is necessarily true of the marginal cost curve? (5 marks) When average total cost curve is falling it is necessarily above the marginal cost curve. If the average total cost curve is rising, it is necessarily below the marginal cost curve. Describe the difference between average revenue and marginal revenue. Why are both of these revenue measures important to a profit-maximizing firm? (5 marks) Average revenue is total revenue divided by the amount of output. Marginal revenue is the change in total revenue from the sale of each additional unit of output. Marginal revenue is used to determine the profit-maximizing level of production and average revenue is used to help determine the level of profits. Describe the process by which the market for capital and the market for land reach equilibrium. As part of your description, elaborate on the role of the stock of the resource versus the flow of services from the resource. (6 marks) Equilibrium in the markets for land and capital are governed by the value of marginal product for these factors relative to their supply. One difference between these markets and the market for labor is the distinction between rental value (flow) and purchase price (stock). This difference is reconciled by noting that in efficient markets, the purchase price should reflect the value of the stream of services provided by the land or capital (or the sum of rental values appropriately discounted). a. List and explain two conditions necessary for firms to be able to successfully practice price discrimination. (2 marks) Differences in price elasticity of demand between markets: There must be a different price elasticity of demand from each group of consumers. The firm is then able to charge a higher price to the group with a more price inelastic demand and a relatively lower price to the group with a more elastic demand. By adopting such a strategy, the firm can increase its total revenue and profits. To profit maximize, the firm will seek to set marginal revenue = to marginal cost in each separate (segmented) market. Barriers to prevent consumers switching from one supplier to another: The firm must be able to prevent market seepage or consumer switching defined as a process whereby consumers who have purchased a good or service at a lower price are able to re-sell it to those consumers who would have normally paid the expensive price. This can be done in a number of ways, and is probably easier to achieve with the provision of a unique service such as a haircut rather than with the exchange of tangible goods. Seepage might be prevented by selling a product to consumers at unique and different points in time for example with the use of time specific airline tickets that cannot be resold under any circumstances. Explain how each of the following industries practices price discrimination: (6 marks) restaurant Restaurants sometimes have childrens menus. It can be profitable if adults who come to restaurants with children are, on the average, more sensitive to prices on menus than adults who come to restaurants without children. Children often do not value restaurant food and service, and often waste a large part of their food. Parents know this and do not want to pay a lot for their childs meal. If restaurants treat children like adults, the restaurants may lose customers as families switch to fast-food restaurants. If this explanation is correct, then restaurants price discriminate. airline Airlines charge different prices for seats on the same plane, depending on when the ticket was purchased, how long the traveler will be staying at the destination, etc. Of course, the cost of operating the plane is independent of these variables. Hairdresser A hairdresser may charge a lower price to children than to adults. The reason they do this is that they believe children to have a differing elasticity of demand to adults. In other words, the price needed to maximize revenue from children is not the same as the price needed to maximize revenue from adults. By charging different prices they will maximize revenue from both groups Calculate the total revenue without price discrimination as well as with price discrimination, and complete the table with your calculations. (4 marks) Price Qd TR TR (with perfect price discrimination) 30 0 22 10 220 220 14 16 224 304 10 24 240 464 7 38 266 562 Briefly describe the characteristics of each of the following market types. Give an example of each market type. (8 marks) pure competition The goods being offered for sale must all be the same. The buyers and sellers must be so numerous that no single buyer or seller influences the market price. Buyers and sellers are price takers. An example would be the wheat market. Monopoly A monopoly is a market in which there is only one seller and the seller sets the price of the product, given the demand curve for that product. An example would be a local cable television company. Oligopoly An oligopoly is a market in which there are only a few sellers, and the sellers do not always compete aggressively. An example would be airline routes. monopolistic competition Monopolistic competition is a market containing many sellers offering slightly different products. Because the products are not the same, sellers have some ability to set price. An example would be the software industry. Use the graph below to explain why a profit-maximizing monopolistically competitive firm must operate at excess capacity. Why is a perfectly competitive firm not subject to the same constraint? (6 marks) Competitive firms do not face downward-sloping demand. The graph shows the firm choosing a level of production in which the intersection of marginal revenue and marginal cost occurs at an output level where average total cost is decreasing. This profit-maximizing output level is less than the efficient scale (minimum of average total cost) and therefore the firm is said to be operating at excess capacity. If the monopolist depicted in the graph below sets a price of $10 and sells 100 units, the corresponding marginal revenue is $5 and marginal cost $3. What recommendation regarding price and quantity would you give this monopolist? Explain your answer. (6 marks) Since MR exceeds MC, recommend an increase in output. Greater sales will require a price reduction. So reduce P below $10 and increase Q above 100. The marketing division of a firm has measured demand for its product and reports that it is Q = 24 P, where Q is units and P is price per unit in dollars. The cost is given in the table below. Complete the table and determine the profit-maximizing level of output for this firm. (6 marks) As indicated in the table below, the optimal output is Q = 5, where MR = MC = 5.80. Output Total Cost Price Revenue Profit 0 10 24 0 -10 1 18 22 22 4 2 20 20 40 20 3 22 18 54 32 4 25 16 64 30 5 29 14 70 41 6 34 12 72 38 7 40 10 70 30 8 48 8 64 16 Define the following terms and explain their importance to the study of economics. (9 marks) barriers to entry Barriers to entry make it difficult or impossible for other firms to enter an industry, thus allowing monopoly to continue to exist. Some examples of barriers include legal restriction on entry, patents, control of scarce resources, large sunk costs, technical superiority, and economies of scale. Patent A patent is a government-granted legal monopoly given to the inventor of a new product or process. During the life of the patent, the firm has a protected monopoly position. Thus, it serves as a barrier to entry. natural monopoly A natural monopoly is an industry in which advantages of large-scale production make it possible for a single firm to produce the entire output of the market at lower average cost than a number of firms each producing a smaller quantity. Most natural monopolies are regulated utilities.

Modernism and the Visual Arts Essay

Originally titled as Le Bain, means the bath; Luncheon on the Grass was exhibited at the Salon de Refuses in 1863. It is painted with oil on a large canvas by Édouard Manet created in between 1862 and 1863. The painting represents the contrast between a female nude with fully clothed men in a rural setting. By that time, normally woman in paintings didn’t look at viewers straight, especially with nudes. Traditionally, nude models mostly looked away from the view. But however, Manet’s naked female model straightly stares at the viewer. This was shocking, but also challenging at the same time. The Luncheon on the Grass, received a great attention by causing public scandal with nude female and painting was success through setting, color, technique, composition and light. Luncheon on the Grass brought in much argument at its reveal. From this painting, the viewer is provoked by a naked female directly looking at the audience. By this time, this naked woman was obviously politically improper and especially, woman looking at the viewer as unashamed was totally unbelievable and offensive in a male-controlled, conquered society. This was the main reasons why it was forbidden and got teased from the public. Not only because picture of the naked female, but it was a commentary, and arguable as well. Painting it makes seem usual, and normal, besides something with sexualized. However, the two fully clothed men are not looking directly; it is only the naked female who grabs attention to be focus of the painting. Once again, the setting is very unusual, and it is unique. It seems like the models are just posing instead of having lunch together. The picnic basket lies on its side in the corner without any attention, and also the naked female has been completely left out along. The woman in far back in lake also seems left out from the lunching group too. None of these people seems gathered in the nature. However, some critics have inferred the painting as oddness with compositional sense, but it is delightful with the thought of the illusory. Manet’s use of color was influenced by the Impressionist movement, and it led the painting successful. Manet’s color use is combined with a very practical theme. He used mostly dark colors for the foreground such like dark greens, orange-browns and blacks for outlines. He also broke up of the movement of figure to add reality. Manet also inserted element of still life which is picnic basket in the bottom left corner of the painting. It subsidizes an added level of color. What is interesting in this painting is that he limited to use warm colors. And instead of having soft brush strokes and color mix, he uses vivid outlines around the figure. This concept lets the figure pop out of the landscape. Looking at the female figure, Manet painted in a flat tone with very little shading to capture the moment. The painting contains flat areas of color, and even in some places, Manet left it as a bare canvas. With limited of shading and contrast using of cool and warm colors prevent the tradition of depth and volume; also cause viewer’s attention to the surface of the painting. Manet’s light source through the painting was also interesting. This impression era is covered by the use of broad and detailed light source, which limits almost no shadows. However, the lightning in this scene of painting is unreliable and unusual. Compare to the two clothed men, the nude female takes the spotted light. She almost has no shadows besides strong outlines. Also because the two clothed men are wearing dark clothes, the nude female obviously pops out from the background and grabs viewers’ attention. I can see where the light hits in different areas, but the nude female takes the main light source, and therefore, the landscape background smoothed out the light. Tradition to this time era, Manet’s techniques were extraordinary and brush strokes become much less developed. Most of his brush strokes have been done in free handed. Focusing on the nude female, her skin is not smoothed out with value of color and brush techniques. Also the background is containing a rough brush strokes. During this time period, most of the artists are hiding brush strokes for their technique, but Manet did the opposites. It is obvious to see each brush stroke in nude female giving a rough complexion. In the background, also this style of rough brush strokes are made noticeable, and this even seems unfinished. Manet was free with technique. He did not try to hide or to follow the trends; indeed, some scenes in the painting seem unfinished. Through the composition, the figures are positioned in central. The interesting thing is that through this composition, I can draw myself a direct pyramid from. From the foreground nude female figure rises up to the lady in the water. With this compositional sense, attention falls between the two men. Men seem very odd and just stuck to be posing because compare to the women two men seems very dull and not interested in. They were not paying attention to the woman, and also not gathered at all. None of the figures seems relaxed. Rather than posing natural in the nature, these figures give tightness look. However, Manet successfully balanced the light against dark, use of cool color background and well blends the nude figure with warm tone, covers up the oddness and conveyed as successful painting. To sum up, Manet’s Luncheon on the grass is with mystery, oddness and wonder. He detailed his idea to the work, and all the elements he included in this painting lead great result follow in 1863. As an impressionist, Manet earned great media attention by causing public scandal and painting was success through setting, color, technique, composition and light. Introduction to Interview and Interrogation Essay

This paper that I am about to write is a case study on a juvenile confession. When I read this story it really bothered me that young people confess when they get in front of high authority people even if they didn’t do anything. Are these so called lawyers, attorneys and prosecutors, scaring these young people so much that they tell them things to make them confess? Well after reading this story, I have realized that this has happened more than once, and is becoming to be a pattern with some of these big shot people that are supposed to take the law seriously and help those in need, not make the ones in need of help scared half to death to ask us for it. On November 7, 1994, in the neighborhood of Englewood, on the south side of Chicago, a worker was outside cleaning up behind a liquor store and when he went to the dumpster to put the garbage in, he found the body of an African American woman who was badly beaten. When the woman was identified, the found out that she was a prostitute and her name was Nina Glover. At the scene of the crime, the policed interviewed a male who was a resident of the neighborhood, his name was Johnny Douglas. He denied that he knew the victim so the police let him go. Now four months after finding this woman in the dumpster, the police had no leads but someone called them and gave them a tip, so they acted on it. They arrested four African American teenagers, (Vincent Thames, Terrill Swift, Harold Richardson and Michael Saunders) for questioning and according to Detective James Cassidy, after interviewing the four, he said that all of them voluntarily confessed to the murder, saying that they all four took turns raping Nina Glover before they actually murdered her. Now DNA testing excluded these four teenagers as the source of semen that was recovered from Glover’s body, and all four boys claimed that the confessions that they had given had been coerced. See more: how to start an essay Even with that said the boys were sentenced based on the signed statements with such detail that they had given about their involvement. In return the jury convicted them each a prison term that ranged up to 30 to 40 years each. The media and the world had given these four teenagers, a group name that would seem to last and latch on to them forever, the Englewood Four. In the year of 2010, two of the boys had requested advanced â€Å"STR† which DNA is testing that comes along with a database search of the genetic profiles f criminals. The test were opposed by the Cook County prosecutors because contending whatever was done, the trial court judgments were said to be final. Finally, a judge heard about what was being asked, and he ordered it to be done and when he did, the results came back in May and the results were stunning. The DNA matched a person that the cops had interviewed right at the crime scene when it happened, none other than Johnny Douglas. So, with that said and done, the four teenagers had to be ruled out and exonerated. As the four young men now, families waited for them to come home, they were ready to give them a big welcome or so it seemed until the State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez announced that she would vigorously fight their release that they had just been granted. Now Johnny Douglas was a man with a long history of preying on prostitutes. He also had a rap sheet that was really impressive: he had 38 convictions, including murder and sexual assault. In the year 2008, someone shot him to death. There were a lot of questions after the exoneration of the four boys and some of those questions were seriously to be thought about? For instance: How did these four confess to crimes that they did not commit? Why did the DNA testing take so long? Why has the state’s attorney of Cook County Anita Alveraz, persistently fought justice for the four? Last but not least, how could the teenagers have provided so many details about the crime if they didn’t commit it? Meanwhile, while all these questions surfaced, Alveraz had her own theory as to what happened at the scene of the crime. She tells us that she thinks that â€Å"Douglas had sex, unprotected with Glover, left her, without harm and later on she was raped and murdered by the Englewood four. Alveraz also said that â€Å"Douglas didn’t kill every other prostitute that he had ever been with, and that DNA evidence in and of itself isn’t always the â€Å"silver bullet† that it’s sometimes perceived to be! † Where does this detective Cassidy fit into this? Well as I kept on reading this story, I realized that he was t he detective that actually was the one questioning the four boys and what he said, was the reason they were convicted because he said they confessed to him. Well, turns out that old detective Cassidy also had a rap sheet of his own. In 1994, the year before this case, the detective had taken a confession from and 11 year old African American boy who was supposed to murder an elderly white woman on the southwest side of Chicago. A federal judge listened to the confession and concluded that his statement had been coerced and the conviction was tossed out the door and the judge ordered the child’s record to be immediately expunged. Again in 1998, detective Cassidy was back, now this time he had another high profile confession with 2 African American boys ages 7 and 8. They admitted killing and 11 year old Ryan Harris and dumping her body out in a backyard. All of this is what Cassidy claims that they said. These two confessions created a national furor over pre-adolescent crime until the authorities found semen in the little girl’s panties. They automatically dropped the charges and they did later on secure a confession from an adult male about this case. Now after all of this Cassidy is no longer able to be active on the force. They had him reassigned to the Medical Examiner’s Office, and now his job is to obtain confessions from the recently departed. Now in my opinion, I would have told him to pack his stuff and go as far away from Cook County as possible and he is to never be able to practice law enforcement again. This story also hits home for me as well, my husband was involved in the wrong group of people, and he also lives in Cook County. He was involved in gang life and all of that, something happened (I’m not going to go into all the details) but to make a long story short, he also had to plead guilty to something that he did not do and he did the time for it. The point here is, these boys were false accused and they were scared into a confession that they didn’t do but landed them into prison. So I have found out that 76 wrongful convictions in Cook County since the advent of DNA testing, 25 were based ion suspects admitting to crimes they didn’t commit, according to the Center on Wrongful Convictions at Northwestern University. So now the Englewood Four, as they’ve been dubbed, await a decision by the prosecutors whether they will be re-tried or not. These Four men were cleared by DNA evidence that linked the state and the system to a career criminal in this particular crime.

Family Is A Role Model - 917 Words

Family is a word that many hold dear to their hearts. Family is defined as â€Å"a group consisting of parents and children living together in a household.† So in society’s eyes, the typical â€Å"family† would include a mom, dad, and siblings. However, that is not the case. Family can be a protector, a therapist, and a role model. Family is someone who protects you. Generally, when someone thinks of a protector they think of a spouse or older sibling. Your spouse will be the one to protect you from a burglar or even some creepy stalker. It’s just like in the movies where the couple hears an alarming noise at night so the wife hides in the bed while the husband picks up a baseball bat and goes to check it out. The same goes for a sibling. In school normally the big brother protects his little sister from bullies, and vice versus. It is an everyday occurrence, someone is always being protective and that individual is commonly considered family. However, there is another type of protector that most have and should be considered family as well. Another type of protector that is well known for doing just that is a pet. For instance, police train their German Shepard to be K-9. The dogs protect them and they protect their dog. Same goes for anybody; they buy dogs to serve as protectors from criminals. All over social media, people post about how their pets are considered family to them. And it isn’t just dogs; it’s any kind of pet one owns.
